Make your own exfoliating bar soap
Taking a step away from liquid body wash (if not being bulk bought) is a great way to become more sustainable, what's even better, is making your own bar soap! It's a lot easier than you'd think with the help and convenience of melt-and-pour soap bases. These bases come in many varieties, including natural and organic options.
Exfoliating soap can be achieved naturally and often with items you already have in your household too. Exfoliating soaps help to gently remove dry, dead skin from your body leaving your skin smooth and nourished.
How to make your own exfoliating bar soap
- Melt-and-pour soap base - Find a melt-and-pour soap base that best suits you, we chose an organic one
- Exfoliant - Select which exfoliants you'd like to use, we are using ground rice husk but porridge, dried flowers, and ground coffee also work well.
- Fragrance - Select your fragrance, opt for a natural essential oil. We're using lavender oil for our soap.
- Soap mold - Use a flexible soap mold, you can find a great variety online these days. They're reusable and made with silicone.
- Heatproof and/or microwave-safe bowl
- Spoon
- Soup pot if using the double-boil method
- Melt your soap base
- Cut your large soap base block into small cubes, place in a heatproof/microwave-safe bowl and microwave until liquidy or liquify using the double-boil methods
- Be careful whilst melting your soap base, it will be very hot as will the bowl.
Add fragrance - Once your soap has been completely liquified you can add in your fragrance - General rule of thumb is to add 1/2 tablespoon of oil to 10 oz. of soap base.
- Pour your soap mixture into your soap mold
- Allow the soap to cool completely
- That's it! you're all ready to use your new soap.
